Description

Chassagne-Montrachet is located to the south of Puligny-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune and is one of Burgundy's greatest white wine appellations. It produces all appellations from village to Grand Cru. The word Chassagne comes from either the Latin 'cassanea' which means an oak wood, or 'cassanus' which means oak. Until the late 19th century the main settlement of this commune was known as Chassagne-le-Haut. However in 1879, in common with other villages in the Côte d'Or, the village was allowed to change its name replacing le Haut with name of their most famous Grand Cru Montrachet. The village appellation covers just over half of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Tasting Note
Our Chassagne-Montrachet 2015 has a beautiful pale gold color. The nose is complex and reveals floral notes imbued with acacia honey. The palate is rich and intense with hints of fresh almonds and honey.

There is excellent mid-palate density, especially for a village-level wine, to the relatively full-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the less refined but more complex finale. Fermented in traditional oak barrels (15% new) for eight to 10 months, this wine shows structure and pent-up energy waiting for release. The silky wine plays with the supple wings while the acid backbone steers and directs the flavour combination to a long finish. The interaction between the wine's lightly spiced oak and the Chinese five-spice melts into each other seamlessly. The clove component in the spice mixture melts into the crisp brown flavours of the wings; the cinnamon provides warmth against the richness of the Burgundy fruit, and the pepper gives high notes that changes the personality of the frisky chardonnay fruit into a solemn deep thinker.

There's a certain lack of finesse that's more than made up for by rich and expressive flavors.
