Description
  • Chassagne-Montrachet is located to the south of Puligny-Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune and is one of Burgundy's greatest white wine appellations. It produces all appellations from village to Grand Cru. The word Chassagne comes from either the Latin 'cassanea' which means an oak wood, or 'cassanus' which means oak. Until the late 19th century the main settlement of this commune was known as Chassagne-le-Haut. However in 1879, in common with other villages in the Côte d'Or, the village was allowed to change its name replacing le Haut with name of their most famous Grand Cru Montrachet. The village appellation covers just over half of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Press review
    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2022 - Burgundy Report - Bill Nanson - December 2023

Ooh - the most perfumed of these villages - beautifully floral with a tiny fleshy generosity. The combination of the last two with an element that's very direct - but also with width. That will be a great village but wait 2-3 years.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2021 - Burghound - June 2023 - 90/100

There is excellent mid-palate density, especially for a village-level wine, to the relatively full-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the less refined but more complex finale. This very dry and youthfully austere effort is excellent and worth considering. 2028+

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2020 - Wine Review Online - March 2023 - 94/100

Latour's mineral-y 2020 is a delight, delivering a fresh stony character buttressed by mouth-watering acidity. Its finesse and prolonged length make you wonder whether they included some Premier Cru that they opted not to bottle separately.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2020 - Jancis Robinson - 16,5/20 pts

Fine example of premier cru Chassagne, this adds a complex mineral character and a finer texture than the Meursault premiers crus. Not at all heavy - just a refined, elegant, pleasurable wine. (AWH) Drink 2022 - 2027

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2020 - Jancis Robinson - 15/20 pts

Pleasant enough as a burgundian Chardonnay but I'd want more from this village wine at the price-point suggested. Nutty, some weight on the palate but a bit dull. (AWH) Drink 2022 - 2024

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2020 - Wine Enthusiast - 94/100

A symphony of flavors, this rich expression exudes both power and finesse. Immediate freshness invites you into the glass, gracefully poised with ripe Meyer lemon, delicately embraced by light green herbs. The palate is accentuated with river stones and a touch of salt, intensifying notes of citrus pith and subtle almond under notes. Gorgeous. (USA, December 2023)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet blanc 2019 - 94 pts - James Suckling - July 2021

Absolutely classic, with the combination of ripeness and elegance the world expects from Chassagne-Montrachet. Fine apple, pear and lemon aromas, a delicate herbal touch adding freshness. Long, elegant finish, driven along at a brisk clip by the mineral acidity. Drink or hold.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2019 - Wine Enthusiast - 93/100

Fermented in traditional oak barrels (15% new) for eight to 10 months, this wine shows structure and pent-up energy waiting for release. Currently showing linear with a perfume of yellow flowers, ripe citrus and fresh almonds, the wine has more complexities to reveal. Cellar through 2026+ before revisiting. (USA, November 2023)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 2018 - James Suckling - 93/100

A ripe, juicy red with berries and light walnut and hazelnut undertones. Blue fruit, too. Medium to full body. Flavorful finish with chocolate and mushroom undertones to the fruit. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2017 - James Suckling - USA - February 2019 - 91/100Quite delicate fresh-pear and cashew aromas with honeysuckle and some chalky nuances. The palate has a very bright core of fresh, citrusy flavors with a long, sherbet-like finish. Strong wine. Very taut. Drink or hold.
    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2017 - Wine Spectator - June 2019 - 92/100

An intense white, rich and buttery, evoking citronella, apricot and lemon flavors, with a hint of pineapple. Reveals good cut underneath the creamy texture, keeping this focused and long. Light spice notes add depth. Drink now through 2024. (Bruce Sanderson, USA)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2017 - William Kelley, Wine Advocate (USA) - January 2019 - "Nicely concentrated"

One of the more powerful, reserved village wines from Latour this year, the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Village exhibits notes of fresh pear, mandarin, spices and dried white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad shouldered and nicely concentrated, with chewy extract and good length on the finish. Drink 2018-2024 (cask sample)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2016 Blanc - James Suckling - February 2018 - 93/100
    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2015 - Neil Cammies - U.K - October 2019Finished in 100% oak, of which 15% is new, this carries on with the opulent bouquet theme with rich butterscotch to the sweet floral tones. The honeyed fruit on the palate still carries crisp minerality which sits well with the luxurious mouthfeel.
    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2015 Blanc - Wine Enthusiast - November 2017 - 90/100

This wine has weight and richness. It is ripe with apricot and peach flavors that are happily balanced by a crisp edge of acidity. Its texture will give it a good future. (USA)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2015 - Burghound.com - June 2017 - 87/100

A pungent and notably ripe nose combines notes of petrol, resin and essence of pear. The supple, rich and seductively textured flavors terminate in a very generously proportioned and mildly rustic and warm finish. While this could easily be enjoyed young I would be inclined to hold it for a few years. 87/2020+

    • Chassagne-Montrachet blanc 2015 - Jancis Robinson - January 2017 - 15.5/20
    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2014 - James Suckling - January 2017 - 92/100

A beautiful, creamy white with sliced apples, lemon curd and hints of mangoes. Some sand, too. Medium to full body and a soft texture, but this is fresh and delicious. Drink now. (USA)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2014 - Wine Enthusiast - October 2016 - 91/100

This wine is textured, with a frim backdrop to the ripe white fruits. Acidity cuts through everything, giving a fragrant character. Drink this developing wine from 2018.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2014 - Burghound.com - June 2016

Top notes from the resin, petrol and white orchard fruit-scented nose. Once again there is excellent volume to the solidly concentrated and sappy medium-bodied flavors that possess good power, indeed the mouth feel of the finish is almost robust.

    • Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 2013 - Wine Enthusiast - October 2015 - 88/100

This wine has strucure and tannins. With ripe apples and quince flavors, it is tight, tense while also full in the mouth. A strong background of acidity gives concentration and considereable freshness at the end. Drink from 2017. (USA)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2012 - Burghound.com - June 2014 - 89/100(...) There is excellent density and plenty of vibrancy to the generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors that deliver fine depth and length. This isn't especially refined but as examples of villages level Chassagne go this is very good and worth your interest. 2017+ By Allen Meadows (USA)

    • Chassagne-Montrachet 2007 - Burghound.com - July 2009 - 87-89/100Reduction and sulfur make the nose impossible to fairly judge though the round, supple and forward flavors display no sulfur-induced dryness as there is good intensity and vibrancy that carries over to the delicious, long and sappy finish. This should clean up with a bit of pre-bottling aeration. 2012+
    • 2006 Chassagne-Montrachet - Wine Enthusiast - October 2008 - 87 points:Soft, open, green and rich, with hints of wood and flavors of pear. Ready to drink now.

This is plump but not heavy. (86-89)/2009+

    • 2004 Chassagne Montrachet - Burghound.com - July 2006 - 88 points :The ripe straw and melon aromas do a quality job of introducing to the rich and relatively powerful flavors that possess solid finishing complexity and very fine length. This is an attractive villages that will benefit from a year or two in the cellar as it's already quite forward.
    • 2004 Chassagne Montrachet - Wine Spectator - December 2006 - 87 points :Sleek, this wife offers lemon and mineral flavors on a vibrant structure. Tightly wound, needing time to unravel all its facets. Fine length. Drink now through 2010.
    • 2003 Chassagne-Montrachet - Burghound.com - September 2005 - 87 points :Very ripe but not roasted or stewed fruit aromas and hints of melon and straw introduce rich, round, rather sweet and full flavors that are delicious. 87/now+
    • 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet - Burghound.com - July 2004 - 87 points :Expressive, clean, very ripe yet very bright chardonnay and herb notes combine with round, full and intense medium weight flavors that offer good definition but not the same vibrancy as the best in this range. In fairness, this could very well be a bit tired from the recent bottling and if so, my score may be on the conservative side. 87/2005+
    • 2002 Chassagne Montrachet - Decanter - August 2005 - 4 stars :Broad but spicy nose, apricots. Fairly rich fruit but still slightly austere. Good concentration, spicy finish. Quite mineral. Good length. 2-8 years.
    • 2001 Chassagne-Montrachet - Irish Independent - April 27th, 2003 :This wine is quite distinctive, with honeyed layers, spice and ripe fruit, plus glorious length.
    • 2002 Chassagne-Montrachet - South China Morning Post - August 21st 2009 :This creamy Chassagne-Montrachet is the perfect match with grilled snapper wings with Chinese five-spice. The silky wine plays with the supple wings while the acid backbone steers and directs the flavour combination to a long finish. The interaction between the wine's lightly spiced oak and the Chinese five-spice melts into each other seamlessly. The clove component in the spice mixture melts into the crisp brown flavours of the wings; the cinnamon provides warmth against the richness of the Burgundy fruit, and the pepper gives high notes that changes the personality of the frisky chardonnay fruit into a solemn deep thinker.
    • 2000 Chassagne-Montrachet - Wine Enthusiast - August 2002 - 88 points :Open and inviting, this wine lays out traditional Chardonnay aromas and flavors of peach and citrus accented by toasty oak in a powerful and easily understood wine. There's a certain lack of finesse that's more than made up for by rich and expressive flavors.
    • 1998 Chassagne-Montrachet - Wine Enthusiast - November 2000 :Scents of pineapple and hazelnuts open into a lush, spicy, forward, slightly toasty wine with immediate drinkability and appeal.
