Description
  • Marsannay is the village which marks the northern gateway to the Côte d'Or when leaving Dijon, the capital of Burgundy and home to the Ducs de Bourgogne. This village marks the beginning of the Route des Grands Crus which follows the N6 highway through the Côte d'Or. Wines from Marsannay are generally lively and robust; characteristics that come from the rich iron soil. Marsannay received its Appellation Contrôlée in 1987 in recognition of its consistently high quality wine.

  • Tasting Note
Lovely ruby in color, Marsannay 2007 clearly expresses red fruit aromas. The nose is also infused with menthol, which contributes great freshness. In the mouth, this wine is complex, with lots of substance and good persistence. Pleasant to taste now, while possessing great structure for cellaring. Tasted July 8th, 2009.
  • Food Pairing

    • Marsannay Rouge 2022 - Bill Nanson Burgundy Report - December 2023A melange of multiple parcels.
Deep, dark, very attractive fruit. Mouth-filling quite sweet, ripe, fruit. Slightly structural. A ripe wine and quite full - chunky fruit.
    • Marsannay Rouge 2021 - James Suckling - July 2023 - 91/100

Redcurrants, sea shells, and rose hips on the nose, with a touch of pink peppercorns. Cool and crisp on the palate, with a medium body and very fine tannins. Stony quality. Try in 2024.

    • Marsannay Rouge 2021 - Bill Nanson Burgundy Report - January 2023

Some aromatic concentration but still a little tight. Hmm, this sits very well on the palate - broad, mobile, cool fruit. A jump in finishing intensity - a super finish - more than very good! (Just racked today...)

    • Marsannay Rouge 2020 - Burghound.com - 87-89/100 pts

Notably ripe aromas include those of cassis, dark raspberry and humus nuances. The rich, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors conclude in a rustic and somewhat raspy finish. While this could be enjoyed shortly after release, it has the stuffing and structure to reward short to mid-term cellaring.

    • Marsannay Rouge 2020 - Wine Review Online - March 2023 - 92/100

Burgundy lovers have discovered the charms of Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Côtes de Nuits. Prices have risen as a result and are poised to continue their climb because the village is in the process of having some vineyards certified as 1er Cru. So, now is the time to act by buying the luscious 2020s. And Latour's is a good place to start. Bright red cherry-like notes complement herbal ones. Suave tannins make it easy to enjoy now. It displays real Côtes de Nuits character at a Côtes de Beaune price. - Michael Apstein

    • Marsannay Rouge 2019 - Burghound - April 2021 - 87/89 pts

There is fine verve and detail to the delicious and solidly concentrated flavors that terminate in a mildly rustic finale. This should drink well shortly after release and repay up to 5 years of bottle aging. 2023+

    • Marsannay 2015 - Wine Spectator - October 2017 - 90/100

    • Marsannay rouge 2015 - Burghound.com - April 2017 - 88/100

An agreeably fresh and earthy nose leads to vibrant and very rich flavors that manage to display good detail on the mildly austere finale. This generously proportioned effort could easily be enjoyed young but a few years of bottle age should help to add a bit more depth. 2020+ Allen Meadows (USA)

From the northernmost village of the Côte d'Or, it is silky, soft and juicy with concentrated red fruit aromas and the customary whiff of the farm. Try it with the rarest of rarest of rare lamb cutlets and redcurrant jelly.

    • 2006 Marsannay- Wine Enthusiast- October 2009- 88/100:While it's light, this Marsannay, from the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits, gives warm, soft pleasure. The fruit has fresh berry ans sweet jam flavors, followed by a layer of dryness that is not excessive and a attractive lively finish.
    • 2006 Marsannay - The Juice 2009 - Matt Skinner - October 2008:Wine producers since the seventeenth century, Louis Latour are one of the oldest and most respected negociant houses in Burgundy today. Producing a raft of wines from within the boundaries of the Côte d’Or, this robust and utterly drinkable example of Pinot Noir from Marsannay in the extreme north is a cracker. Oozing varietal character and charm, here you’ll find generous cherry and raspberry fruit, smells of game and sweet spice, silky mouth-feel, chewy tannins characteristic of the region, and superb length of flavour.
    • 2006 Marsannay - Jancis Robinson – February 2008 – 15.5 points:Sweet strawberry fruit aromas. Dryish fine tannins. Straightforward - and tannins a little too dry to drink this without food. Drink 2009-11.
    • Marsannay 2005 - Rocky Mountain News - July 15th 2008 - "Terrific example of 2005 vintage"2005 may be the greatest red Burgundy vintage of our lifetimes. A terrific example is 2005 Louis Latour Marsannay, stony and lean, with upfront notes of ripe cherry and a clean, raspberry finish.
    • Marsannay 2005 - Wine Spectator - January 2008 - 90/100Selected by Wine Spectator in its annual top 100 wines of the year:#58
Lean and solidly built red, despite its ripe cherry notes up front. Tannins and acidity dominate now, but this has stony character and length with loads of mineral in the aftertaste. Best from 2010 through 2020.
    • Marsannay 2005 - Burghound.com - April 2007 - 85-87/100An earthy, ripe and relatively somber dark berry fruit nose leads to texture, serious and nicely complex middle weight flavors that possess good balance of the structural elements.
    • 2003 Marsannay - Burghound.com - September 2005 - 86 points :Decidedly fresher and more elegant with bright, indeed almost racy aromas and flavors with a hint of vanilla on the mineral-infused finish. The mineral component is subtle but serves to add a touch of firmness to an otherwise generous and forward style. This is really quite pretty in an assuming fashion. 86/now
    • 2002 Marsannay - La Revue du Vin de France - February 2006 :Medium robe, unreserved bouquet, ripe berry notes, spicy, clean and direct. Very fruity palate, with a certain structure. Traditional style, well defined, can be enjoyed now.
    • 2002 Marsannay - Wine Spectator - May 2005 - 85 points :Shows a cherry note, with earth and forest floor accents. Lively, but rustic tannins dominate the finish.
    • 2000 Marsannay - Burghound.com - April 2003 - 84 points :Light ruby color with notes of raspberry and red cherries followed b light, easy, delicious, unpretentious flavors with enough complexity and length to be interesting. There is light yet ripe structure on the finish. Really very pretty and perfect for light dinners or summer sipping. 84/2004-7.
    • Marsannay rouge 1999 - Wineanorak.com - September 2012 - "Very good"Pale coloured. Appealing herby cherry fruit nose. Nice savoury edge to the cherry fruit on the palate. Tasty in a light style. Very good. By Jamie Goode (UK).
    • 1999 Marsannay - The Sunday Time - March 2003 :Almost the first wine village on the Côte d'Or you come to south of Dijon, Marsannay is best known for the sprightly rosés it produces. The lighter, almost earthy reds can be good here, too, if the wine producer has aimed for concentration. Louis Latour certainly has and I much enjoyed this 1999's bold, leaf mould-scented fruit with plenty of young, crunchy beetrooty fruit to the fore.
    • 1999 Marsannay - Blackpool Gazette - June 28th, 2003 :He has a pleasantly intense bouquet of red summer fruits, and a palate as smooth as peach skin.
    • 1999 Marsannay - Jancis Robinson.com - February 8th, 2003 :Full, sweetish Pinot Noir with lots of fruit. A red burgundy that is delightfully easy to drink now.
