- From the gently sloping hillside overlooking the ancient walled town of Beaune comes this classic white Burgundy from Maison Louis Latour. White Beaune accounts for only 5% of the total production from this appellation. The soil in this region is made up of chalk and limestone which suits the Chardonnay well.

from Latour's Premier Cru Les Grèves and Aux Cras, with a splash of
higher-toned Chardonnay grown on Montagne Saint-Désiré — all located a
stone's throw from Corton-Charlemagne (see the map above)! Brilliant
pale-gold in color, infused with mouthwatering aromas of ripe apple and
pear, a hint of anise and honeysuckle. Unusually rich and wound-up — as
is so common among the top 2013 white Burgundies — dense and compact yet
still terrifically vibrant. Serve this gorgeous Chardonnay in oversized
Riedel, give it 30 minutes of air, and wait for the fireworks to begin.

A year older than the Montagny 1er Cru also tasted, but a different style too, this richer and more buttery, with a sheen of creamy oak over riper fruit. In the mouth that nuttiness and Cox's pippin character give more weight and there is more texture, the extra ounce of ripeness nicely offset by some grip and keen acid in the finish. Delicious

It offers excellent richness, an oily texture, a medium body, and long, pure flavors of sweet pears and apples. Anticipated maturity: now 2002.
